    Do I need a provisional license to obtain a definitive license?

    Yes, a provisional driving license is a requirement for every student undertaking any driving course. This is a requirement under traffic act to allow a learner to drive an instructional vehicle.

    The baseline age to obtain a driver’s license is 18 for Vehicles and 16 for motorcycles.

    An interim license is a license you obtain upon passing the driving test at Petanns Driving School, applying for a driving license and paying the fees. Through the e-Citizen portal you can print the interim license while waiting for the definitive license within 14 days, while a provisional license is a license that you obtain after completing the driving course at Petanns Driving School in order to be able to practice or learn how to be driver with a qualified instructor or driver.

    A Certificate of Competence is a document that you obtain upon meeting certain requirements, first upon completing driving course and driving school, second upon passing a driving test at a driving test unit. Though both are called certificate of competence they have different significance and meaning. You need to have a certificate of competency of finishing driving course/school to be able to apply for a provisional license or book a driving test. On the other hand you need a certificate of competence of passing a driving test in order to apply for a driving license in Kenya. Two documents with the same name but different values.
